Greetings,
I had the pleasure of visiting Good Success Academies this past weekend. Good Success Academies is one of our Presbytery’s Spring 2025 Church Mission w/ Community Agency Grant recipients. Good Success Academies is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2010 by Rev. Allen Shelton in partnership with Central Presbyterian Church in Summit, First and Trinity Presbyterian Church in South Orange and Watchung Presbyterian Church in Bloomfield.
Good Success Academies prepares youth for college, trade school, the workplace and responsible adulthood. It’s an innovative college and career readiness program that operates in two phases, an academic year program and a summer employment program. The summer employment program consists of internships and participation in the summer entrepreneurship initiative. This further empowers youth to succeed in the workplace by providing paid work experience over the summer months.
The students are currently employed at Mountainside Medical Center, The IMANI Tutoring Program in Montclair and the Sweet Roots Farmstand. The Sweet Roots Farmstand is open for business every Saturday from 10am to 3pm until Saturday, August 16th. There are actually two locations where you can support the young entrepreneurs. The first is St. James Episcopal Church at 581 Valley Rd in Montclair and The Unitarian Church at 67 Church Street in Montclair as well.
The grant funding helps to provide stipends for the students, staff and those participating in the internship program throughout the school year. This summer the program is employing 15 students from different high schools throughout Essex County. Through theirparticipation the youth gain invaluable skills in organization, teamwork, business math, professional excellence, customer service, food science and community support.
On behalf of the Presbytery of Northeast New Jersey, we would like to thank you Rev. Shelton, your staff, volunteers and the partnering churches for your hard work and dedication to the students through Good Success Academies.
